I read in Ride Magazine that Maria Costello was going to take part in a 12 hour Spinnathon in aid of Coming Home in February 2012. They were looking for people to join 30 minute classes to support them.
I knew Maria from the DD paddock, and thought that the cause was an excellent one, so I rang the gym to book in for a session. This was a a bit foolhardy as Id never actually been on a spin bike! Marias' partner in crime was Emily Campbell, and she was very encouraging, and got me to sign in for two classes.
When I got to the event (in a gym in Northampton) I discovered that Emily was not a girl you say no to! "I'm sure you can do a a few more classes for us, we really need people to ride with us". So I thought I'd do an hour, take a break and the do some more. Well I eventually did 4.5 hours in the saddle. Not bad for someone who had only ever done one 30 minute spin class before!
The girls were amazing! Spinning hard to the end. Maria kept going even when the going got almost too much, she was really hurting. Emily just kept pedalling like a dervish whilst smiling and encouraging everyone else!
Its not too late to support Coming Home, who provide adapted accommodation for injured service people.
